May
7th - We had a beautiful clear day and left
directly after work and school to go to Warrior's
Path State Park in Colonial Heights.
Immediately after we crossed the bridge in the park
(see
map here), we parked the car on the right
side of the road and set out on the Devil's Backbone
Trail. This trail was very well maintained and
basically followed the Holston River through a
wooded, steep ridge with overlooking cliffs.
Once we reached the high point of this ridge
(elevation ~1500'), we stopped to rest and take some
photos. At this point we had nice views of the
river and the surrounding mountains. We could
also see I-81 in the distance.
We
then descended down the backside of the ridge until
we found Fall Creek. It was here that the
trail name changed from Devil's Backbone to Fall
Creek Loop. We continued through the loop for
approximately another mile... following the steam
and then going through some grassy fields that were
at one time old farmland. Once we finished the
loop, we returned to Devil's Backbone and retraced
our steps back to the car.
The
entire trek was approximately 3.4 miles, which we
completed in a little less than two hours. It
wasn't all easy as we had over 1000 feet in
elevation gain throughout the
hike.
