July
27th - I left after work on a Friday
afternoon to explore the Holston Mountain vicinity
on trail #2024, and attempt to climb to the summit
of Holston High Point (highest point in Sullivan
County, TN). I began my hike at the
Hinkle Branch trailhead (elevation 1950') off of
Highway 91 in Stoney Creek at approximately 3:00
p.m. This hike started on a gravel road, but
eventually turned to a dirt trail, which is primarily used
as a horse trail. I found the yellow blazed
trail not very well marked and I got confused a
couple of times on my direction (ok... I actually
got lost), but finally made it
to Low Gap Campground (elevation 4000') after about
a 3.5 mile climb. I was worried that daylight
was running out on me, so I turned around at that
point instead of climbing on to the summit.
However I did explore a little more on my descent
and found some pretty cascades on Hinkle Branch.
When I arrived back at my car, my GPS showed that
I'd traveled 8.1 miles round-trip. I plan on
returning sometime soon to climb to the summit.
