November
28th - I went up on Buffalo Mountain after
work for a quick hike before heading home, and I
decided to do the "Cascade Trail". This was my first time on this
trail, which provided really nice views of Johnson
City almost all the way up, especially with most of the leaves fallen from
the trees.
I
started out at the main trailhead (elevation 2380'),
and after about a quarter of a mile my first stop
was Huckleberry Knob (elevation 2500'). This
is an east facing knob directly overlooking Johnson
City. The views here were very nice, and I
stopped to take the three photos shown below.
After
Huckleberry Knob I began ascending the Cascade
Trail, and eventually reached the "Cascade" after
approximately one mile into the hike. This is
located where the trail crosses a
small stream in a steep hollow, but the stream was
almost completely dry so there was no cascade today.
From
there I climbed steadily for about another 6 tenths
of a mile where I reached a bench at 3000'
elevation. It was here that I decided to turn
around because darkness was coming in quickly.
I retraced my steps back down the mountain, and
arrived at my car right at sunset.
Total
distance on this hike was 3.1 miles.
