May
2nd & 3rd, 2008 -
Cam and I went out for a short overnight backpack in the
Osborne Farm/Cross Mountain Area.
We
parked the car at the Highway TN91/A.T. crossing, and headed
north on the A.T. We traveled though the scenic fields of
the Osborne Farm, and then on for another mile or so up Cross
Mountain. With our very late start in the day, we only
hiked 2.1 miles before setting up camp at a nice spring.

At
our campsite, Cam and I gathered wood and made a fire. We
set up the tent, and then cooked a dinner of cheesy noodles and
pepperoni. We talked by the fire well past dark, and then
retired to the tent for three games of Yahtzee. We both
slept well, and had a warm night. |

The next morning we awoke
early, fixed breakfast, and packed up all our gear. There was rain
in the forecast, but the morning was beautiful as we made our way back
down the mountain and across the farm. We took some photos and had a
nice rest and brunch at the bench overlooking Shady Valley. It began
to rain on our drive home, so our hike distance turned out
perfect. |

Total
Miles Hiked: 4.2
Getting There:
Driving
- From Elizabethton, get on Highway 91 toward Stoney Creek.
Proceed 19 miles (into the Cherokee Nat. Forest) to the
intersection of Cross Mountain Road. There is a graveled
parking area on the right with a national forest
sign.
Trails
- To head north on the A.T. (thru Osborne Farm), cross the road
from the parking area and go through the stile. It is about
one mile through the open fields of the farm, and then it is about
another mile to the nice spring where we camped.
